Some lakes freeze over at the surface, while they have a ground temperature of around 25°C, even in winter. The longest river on the continent, Onyx, runs through the dry valleys and has a length of 25 km.
The moon boots on this picture are part of the standard equipment on Antarctic expeditions. Beneath them, the fashion-conscious explorer usually wears two or three pairs of thick socks and woollen liners.
