The close vicinity to the cold continent is omnipresent in Punta Arenas. Even the beer
is called "Polar Imperial" and the strong wind here is ice cold the whole year round.
The shops are often only sparsely equipped and hence it is very difficult to get all the
items that have been forgotten to buy before. Yet the time when the ship leaves is fixed.
Whoever is not aboard in time will get left behind.
On the 23rd of February 2001, the Polarstern leaves the harbour of Punta Arenas and takes its
100 scientists and crewmen out into the sheltered waters of the Strait of Magellan.
And so, everyone on board leaves behind a complicated world...
