Back in the civilization:
At the 12th of April 2001, the Polarstern enters the eastern side of the over 700 km
long and sometimes only a few hundred metres wide Strait of Magellan.
Accompanied by South Patagonian steppe, treeless hills and occasional glaciers on either side,
we get closer to Punta Arenas.
Oil rigs escort our way through the Strait, a strange and bizarre sight in this subantarctic
landscape. And yet a not ignorable sign that we are getting back into civilization.
